Water Damage: Causes, Types, and Flood Damage

Causes of Water Damage

Water damage can occur due to a variety of reasons, including:

  • Plumbing leaks
  • Flooding from natural disasters
  • Leaking roofs
  • Burst pipes
  • Malfunctioning appliances
  • Clogged drains
  • Sewage backups

Types of Water Damage

Water damage is classified into three categories:

Category 1: Clean Water

– Originates from sources such as broken water pipes, sinks, or bathtubs.
– Does not pose a significant health risk.

Category 2: Gray Water

– Comes from sources such as washing machines, dishwashers, or toilets.
– May contain bacteria or contaminants.

Category 3: Black Water

– Originates from sources such as sewage backups or floodwaters.
– Contains hazardous bacteria, viruses, or other contaminants.

Is Water Damage the Same as Flood Damage?

While both water damage and flood damage involve the presence of water, they are not the same. Flood damage occurs when an area is submerged under a large amount of water, usually from a natural disaster. Water damage, on the other hand, can occur from a variety of sources, including those mentioned above.
